Location: Moscow, Russia

Start Date and Duration: to start January 1, 2019. Will be expert in residence, temporary employee position (20 months) with potential for renewal/extension.

PH International (Project Harmony, Inc.) is a non-profit organization based in Waitsfield, Vermont with 33 years of experience focusing on civic engagement, cross cultural learning, professional exchanges and increased opportunities in the digital age. PH has been working in Russia since 1985 and has field offices in Armenia, Ukraine, Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We are currently implementing programs with local partners also in Azerbaijan and Macedonia.

SUMMARY:

PH International seeks a Media Literacy Fellow to coordinate and serve as our primary expert in providing high-quality, evidence-based media literacy programs in Russia for the period of 20 months. The Media Literacy Fellow will work out of the American Center in Moscow located at the U.S. Embassy and the media lab located there. The media lab is designed to provide students and other American Center patrons the opportunity to conduct research (Learn), connect with other citizen journalists (Connect), and contribute to the conversation through valuable products like podcasts, videos, and blogs (Produce). The Media Literacy Fellow will work in coordination with American Center staff as colleagues and teammates, especially as AC patrons come for events, research, workshops, etc.

The Media Literacy Fellow will:

  1. Develop and guide media programming and outreach activities for youth audiences focused on fact-based news.
  2. Develop and facilitate bilingual online courses with integrated multi-media materials.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • BA and/or Master’s in education, media, or related degree and experience working with youth, adults and professionals in media literacy. Equivalent experience (3-5 years) or education will be considered.
  • Minimum of 2 years of international development work experience
  • Fluent spoken and written Russian (native fluency a plus)
  • Understanding of Russian media and digital environment
  • Strong presentation and training skills
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in developing course materials on media literacy that combine classroom instructional materials and virtual training modules with interactive games and media content
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in training and teaching (on-line and in person)
  • Skilled in Microsoft office, Google for Business, iPad and video capture software, and Adobe

AREAS OF Responsibility:

The ML Fellow will keep office hours in the American Center in Moscow for at least 40% of the time and develop and implement scheduled group trainings and interactions with AMC visitors, including guiding visitors through a suite of fact-checking resources and tools as they research various media sources. An additional 40% of the ML Fellow’s time will be spent developing course materials on media literacy, tailored specifically to the Russian-language media space. The remaining 20% of the Fellow’s time will be spent travelling in the Moscow region, and potentially outside of Moscow, to meet with contacts and deliver presentations to local partner organizations. Support will be provided for bi-lingual translations, editing and IT support.

Duties include:

  1. Develop bilingual (English-Russian) online courses and multi-media materials suited to blended learning environments combining classroom instructional materials as well as virtual, interactive training modules, games and media content.
  2. Develop materials that support media literacy programs at the American Center.
  3. Develop, test and refine the media literacy curriculum and implement workshops with Embassy partners and alumni.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

  • A comprehensive compensation package will be provided to the Media Literacy Fellow that includes the following (more details will be provided upon request):
  • Salary to be commensurate with level of experience and regional knowledge.
  • Round-trip international travel from the United States to Moscow and shipping allowance.
  • Travel allowance for one round-trip international travel to the U.S.
  • Housing allowance.
  • Pre-departure & settling-in allowance to cover visa fees, airport transfer fees, etc.
  • Local health insurance and emergency medical evacuation insurance.
  • In-country transportation allowance.

Period of Performance: January 1, 2019 - August 31, 2020

POST FOR ML Fellow

  1. The position will be based in Moscow with potential travel to other areas in the country.
  2. This is a short-term, temporary employment position.
  3. The ML Fellow will report to the Vermont based Lead Program Manager.
