Vice President, Capacity Building

Position:     Vice President, Capacity Building

Location:    Flexible, but reasonable overlap with US workday

Anticipated Travel:   Approximately 60%, primarily to Asia and Africa

POSITION SUMMARY

The Vice President of Capacity Building (“VP” ) is primarily responsible for:

  • Leading the Capacity Building business line to:
    • Build and close on a pipeline of capacity building contracts that are consistent with Employer’s mission and strategy
    • Ensure high quality deliverables and exceptional client satisfaction while meeting annual goals
  • Building new segments of the Capacity Building business that strengthens the ability of financial institutions to succeed in the financing of social enterprise SMEs such as affordable schools (initially) and clinics, green businesses etc. This will involve:
    • Building the pipeline of financial insitutions
    • Establishing partnerships with local stakeholders and quality of education providers, so that the quality of education is addressed for the financial institutions that Employer’ FI clients serve
    • Raising grant/contract funding to support both the capacity building of schools (social SMEs) at financial instituitons, and strengthening education quality and impact measurement.
    • Ensuring that the right stakeholders are engaged (regulators, teachers association etc.)
    • Collaborating with colleagues to enable them to fulfill their responsibilities successfully and timely

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The VP is a key member of the employer’s team, leading employer’s largest and highest impact business line and delivering most of the company’s earned revenue while working for the company’s overall best interests. As such, the VP contributes significantly to company strategy, policy, and thought leadership.

The VP’s specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing business
    • Build, close and manage relationships with new and existing clients and funders
    • Secure contracts to meet annual goals for capacity building projects and fundraising

 

  • Leading and managing the Capacity Building business line
    • Develop technical approaches, assemble project teams, ensure and contribute to high quality deliverables completed on time, achieve high client satisfaction
    • Build expertise, technical approaches and tools for the social enterprise SME segment, concentrating first on affordable private schools
    • Contribute technical expertise to long-term assignments as appropriate
    • Maintain and expand the cadre of trusted consultants, including local consultants from Asia and Africa, and experts in financing schools and social enterprises
    • Conduct strategic and operational assessments, market assessments or other short-term technical work as needed and appropriate
  • Contributing to Employer’s overall objectives
    • Recommend enhancements to company strategy and delivery
    • Develop and strengthen strategic relationships

 

Reporting and Supervisory Relationships

Reports to:     President & CEO

Supervises:     Senior Manager, Capacity Building

Senior Manager, Social Enterprises (new position to be filled)

Consultants contracted for capacity building projects

Collaborates closely with:

Associate, Fundraising

                       

 

Minimum Requirements:

Experience Technical Skills and Education:

  • At least 15 years of progressive and relevant experience leading to VP level or higher within financial institutions is required, preferably within an international institution
  • Proven business development and/or fundraising skills in both the private sector and international development sector is required
  • At least 5 years working in SME finance in developing or emerging markets is required
  • At least 5 years experience leading strategic or implementation projects is required
  • Consulting experience in the private financial sector as well with large donor projects is strongly preferred
  • Excellent English speaking and writing skills is required; proficiency in additional languages such as French preferred
  • Proposal writing experience preferred
  • Multi-country work experience is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree preferred.
  • Ease of travel internationally is a requirement for the candidate
